Cyanotype is one of the oldest photographic printing processes, discovered in 1842 by the English astronomer Sir John Hershel. The process involves coating paper with a photosensitive emulsion made by reacting potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate, and then exposing the image to ultraviolet light. The water soluble iron salts are washed away and what remains is Prussian blue. Each image is printed in my basement laboratory. No two images are exactly the same, but are close approximations in tonal qualities.
